At present, footwear and attire priced as much as Rs 1,000 are taxed at 5 per cent. Past the brink, 12 per cent Items and Companies Tax (GST) is levied.
The 56th GST Council, chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and attended by state counterparts, determined to lift the brink for footwear and attire within the 5 per cent slab to Rs 2,500/ piece, from Rs 1,000/piece.
GST Council on Wednesday determined to get rid of the 12 and 28 per cent slab and transfer the vast majority of the objects from these slabs to five and 18 per cent respectively.
