PARIS – Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was focused by demise threats from an inmate at Paris's La Sante jail, the place he started serving his sentence this week, prompting a probe, the Paris prosecutor's workplace stated on Wednesday.
“On October 22, 2025, the Paris prosecutor's workplace was knowledgeable by the director of La Sante jail of a video circulating on social media, clearly filmed by an inmate, through which he made threats upon Nicolas Sarkozy's arrival on the facility,” the prosecutor's workplace stated in an emailed assertion to Reuters.
Three inmates have been questioned as a part of the investigation, and two cellphones have been seized throughout a search of the jail, it added.
Sarkozy, who led France from 2007 to 2012, on Tuesday started serving a five-year sentence after being convicted of conspiring to boost marketing campaign funds from Libya.
The previous president has been assigned two armed law enforcement officials for defense throughout his incarceration, a measure that has sparked complaints from jail guard unions.
