The establishing of the fourth bench in Kolhapur comes amid calls for from varied quarters through the years in order to ease the burden on litigants and legal professionals who must journey to Mumbai, situated 380 km away, for listening to of their pleas.
At current, aside from the principal bench in Mumbai, the HC has two extra benches — at Nagpur in Vidarbha area and Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) within the state's Marathwada area.

On August 1, a notification was issued by Bombay HC's Chief Justice Alok Aradhe appointing Kolhapur as a circuit bench.The Kolhapur bench will probably be useful from Monday (August 18) with a division bench and two single benches.The brand new bench could have jurisdiction over six districts – Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg (final two situated in coastal Konkan area).The Kolhapur division bench will comprise Justices M S Karnik and Sharmila Deshmukh, whereas Justices S G Dige and S G Chapalgaonkar will preside over the one benches.
The division bench is anticipated to listen to issues together with Public Curiosity Litigations, civil writ petitions, first appeals, household courtroom appeals, contempt appeals in addition to all different civil and legal issues from the districts of Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg.
The only bench of Justice Dige will hear legal appeals, legal revision functions, bail functions and different legal issues.
Justice Chapalgaonkar will preside over a single bench listening to civil writ petitions, civil functions and different civil issues assigned to a single decide. PTI
