Centre imposes 10% import obligation, 20% further cess on yellow pea imports forward of kharif season

The Centre introduced on Wednesday a ten% import obligation and a further 20% Agriculture Infrastructure Growth Cess (AIDC) on yellow pea imports, to be efficient from November 1.

The full levy of 30% marks a major coverage shift geared toward supporting home pulse growers forward of the upcoming kharif season.

For months, farmer teams had been urging the federal government to limit duty-free imports of yellow peas from nations like Canada and Russia. They argued that the inflow of low cost imports was miserable home market costs and undermining the returns for native growers.
